Psychiatry and mental health
Today is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to remembering the importance of mental health. Taking place on October 10th each year, it is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health services and support.
The integration of genomics into mental health care is increasingly important. In some cases, genetic factors can influence the diagnosis and management of psychiatric conditions. By equipping mental health professionals with accessible genomic resources, we can enhance patient outcomes through personalised care strategies.
At the South West Genomic Medicine Service, we are proud to support this goal, working with our Genomic Medicine Service partners, charity partners, and fellow healthcare professionals to raise awareness of available resources and guidance.
Here are some examples:
Mental Health GeNotes
Earlier this year, GeNotes launched its first Mental Health resources, aiming to support mental health professionals in integrating genomic knowledge into patient care. This reflects the growing recognition of genomics’ role in mental health diagnostics and treatment.
The mental health element is the 11th collection added to GeNotes. It provides clinicians with concise, practical information to aid decision-making at various stages of the clinical pathway.
Developed in collaboration with NHS clinical experts, the resources are designed for use directly within clinical settings. We are especially grateful to the Fragile X Society who worked with us on a new entry for GeNotes, ensuring the patient voice was centred in our work.
